The easiest and valid way to try Ubuntu is doing a live session.
just download [1] the right image for your architecture (32 bit works on 64 bit 
too), control that md5sum match [2] and burn it to a CD using a low speed.
insert the Cd on your pc, power on (probably it will start automatically), if 
not select in boot window to start from cdrom then at first screen hit a key, 
select your language with arrows keys and be sure that is selected Try Ubuntu 
without install (or something else), hit enter.
It's like an installation, but it use the cdrom instead the hard disk, note 
that the executions will not be fast like an HD installation.
In this way you will Verify if Ubuntu works well on your pc, without depend on 
other softwares. Some others distros have a livecd to live test the O.S. too.
