If you do not feel comfortable building the dbmeasure software, please
let me know and I'll build it and make it available for you.

Could you also do the following:

1. Run this command in a terminal: apport-collect -p alsa-base 540380
2. Update yoru ALSA drivers, as outlined here: 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

Once you have completed the second step, please check the volume
controls again, to see whether you have the same incorrect volume
adjustment behavior. If you do, we can then use dbmeasure to work out
what needs to be fixed.
