I' pretty sure this has something to with bugs
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/406173 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/313205

Happens for me (Lucid) as well but it doesn't really need any user action.
Suddenly something just decides to crash and theme changes to that old and ugly
one.
Starting appearance dialog (System->Preferences->Appearance) fixes the problem
instantly except for few apps (nautilus and xchat which both need to restart to
get back to new theme). "Killall nautilus" isn't so bad task but restarting
xchat is irritating.
