No worries about the emails - I was a bit surprised at the sudden flurry of activity though!
I got wireless to work by using the hotkey to switch on the wireless, then disable / re-enable wireless in Network Manager. Also I found that if I used the hotkey to switch on the wireless as the netbook was booting (before GDM starts) then Network Manager detected it.
