Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
How to replicate:
Go to Places / Connect to Server.
Select FTP (with login).
Enter IP address of server and username. Click Connect. Enter password.
An icon was created on the Desktop with the name "ftp as <username> on
<IP address>". Right-click the icon, select Properties.
At this point, the numbers on the Contents line start incrementing.
Apparently, the file manager is trying to determine the contents of the
folder and display statistics about it. That's a good thing for local
folders (provided they are not huge).
But it's a bad thing for remote folders like this. This is the entire
hard-disk on a remote machine, and the connection is established over
the Internet via VPN. It's a waste of all kinds of resources (CPU and
disk activity on the remote system, bandwidth on both ends of the
connection) to do statistics about this folder.
By the way, if I open a Nautilus window, I go to Edit / Preferences /
Preview / Folders / Count number of items, the current setting is "Local
Files Only". It looks like, for some reason, Nautilus thinks this is a
local folder or something, and starts counting the files. That's not
what I want. I changed it to "Never" but it made no difference (did not
restart Nautilus after change).
