Can you please elaborate on the 'the newest fglrx driver doesn't work
with kernel 2.6.20 without a patch'? It works for quite a number of
people.
If it does not work for the particular model of your graphics card, then
the vendor/product ID should indeed be blacklisted.
Can you please give us the output of those commands:
lspci | grep VGA
lspci -n | grep 300
