This is a fairly extensive patch. I'd really like to see some feedback
from kernel developers about this patch in relation to 2.6.x kernels.
What I would prefer is if there is a patch in a newer (> 2.6.15) kernel
that could be easily backported (especially if it's already in upstream
git, because then it's just a simple git command to pull the patch in).
