Public bug reported:

After installation, the boot process stopped just after choosing kernel
(the default) in GRUB, the last message was

Starting up...

I assembled some details of my hadrware, mainboard and disks, also
output from fdisk.

ASUS P3V4X, chipset Apollo Pro 133A
Primary Master WDC WD205BA
  Type AUTO
  Cylinders 1024
  Head 255
  Sector 63
  PIO Mode 4
  ULTRA DMA Mode DISABLED
Secondary Master ASUS CD-S250/A
Secondary Slave NONE in Setup, however there is WDC AC23200L
Graphic card on AGP MGA G200 AXP

The installation was to /dev/hda3 . This is the output from 'fdisk
/dev/hda':

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2495.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help):
Disk /dev/hda: 20.5 GB, 20525137920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2495 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 784 6297448+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 785 915 1052257+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
