Sorry, my daily computing experience is now on a MacBook Pro rather than my old laptop, and thus on OSX rather than Ubuntu. I had upgraded it to lucid but wasn't sure if the problem was still there. Just dug out the laptop and updated everything now:
$ sudo aptitude update ... $ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade ... $ lsb_release -d Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS I've suspended and resumed 5 times now without any issue.
