I think I have a similar problem. I do hear noise, not music or
intentional sounds but there is a loud thump when the machine starts up
or is shut down and when I adjusted the volumes in alsamixer from the
cli i could hear a noise from the speakers as I slid the volume sliders.
I'm dual boot and in windows the volumes are turned up and the sound is
fine. Pusleaudio shows sound playing when I play an mp3 through
rhythmbox, but there is no music. I generally don't enable system
sounds like startup, but I have turned all system sounds on to check
this just to see if it's only rhythmbox having an issue and there are no
sounds from applications or the startup sounds.
