None of the users are part of the audio group, which is the correct configuration according to the wiki. (Normally, I would expect the microphone to consistently work for whatever user is currently logged in.) To reproduce: Login to user A. Go to System > Preferences > Sound and then the input tab. Make some noise and notice that the Input level meter registers it. Login to user B. Switch back to user A. Make noise. Notice that the Input level meter does not register it.
