It seems that the "Bug" stems from the fact that the format of my music files are variable: 16 bit, 24bit, 44kHz, 48kHz. It seems that the music players available in Ubuntu will play only 16 bit wav files at 44 kHz. An exception is Audacity, which is not designed to be a player, and doesn't perform very well in that capacity.
