After trying a few things I think I have tracked this down to a problem with the module asus_atk0110. Since blacklisting this module the behavior has not come back. If I put the module back in, I see the problem again.
There are references on the web that for an Asus P7P55D motherboard this driver does not have the correct bios memory mapping. As another note, when the lock-up did occur, looking at /proc/interrupts, int 12 failed to update.
