OK, final note for bug maintainers:  my system is suffering from this

It is a known kernel issue affecting Core i7 machines with Intel X58
BIOS.  The workaround is: boot with kernel option "hpet=verbose".  This
restores full function, all mystery behaviors such as stuttering sound,
slow typing with frequent repeated keys, SATA power-up issues on boot,
hangs while accessing USB, etc, go away.
