The same problem here when using the ATI proprietary driver from the Lucid repo. Anyway if install the ATI's last versión driver at their site the brightness indicator works ok. I've noticed that the ATI Catalyst Control Center apps (normal and root) disapear from the System>Administration menu sometimes when using this last one. Waiting for a fix.
