Update: I tried running it a third time; I got the document recovery screen -
presumably to try to recover the empty document created the last time it
crashed. This worked fine, but once I told it to skip the recovery the desktop
froze again - probably right at the point when the window should have opened,
so maybe mutter gets stuck trying to render the window for some reason.
ps: I'm not 100% sure how to generate a good bug report when a freeze like this
occurs (since I can't use the program's bug reporter and the desktop freezes
preventing apport from running - and since I'm not as expert as I'd like to
be!) Let me know if there's a way for me to gather more useful information.
