Unbeknown to me, on first boot a kernel is extracted from the /boot
partition and replaces the current one. This would explain why the image
worked on first boot (with my own kernel) and failed on the second (with
a previous kernel). The newest version of the image now extracts the
correct kernel for use on subsequent reboots.
