Public bug reported:
HP NC8000 laptop with ATI 9600 chipset.
With "Desktop Effects" enabled!
If you restart GDM (ctl+alt+backspace) the cpu will be fully utilized. opened a
terminal and TOP showed minimal cpu utilization. Opened System Monitor, no one
process was pegging the cpu, but the cpu utilization was at 99%
Disabled "Desktop Effects" and processor went down to normal utilization
Re enabled "Desktop Effects" and processor stayed at normal utilization
