Sorry for being fuzzy about this: Vanilla 2.6.36-rc4 (from kernel.org) will _partly_ fix this. On my Latitude E6510, I (first) see a blank/black screen after booting. I wait for some time (30 seconds), and then switch to a (virtual) console (e.g. with ctrl-alt F2). I still see a blank screen. But now I switch back to X11 (with crtrl-alt F7), and _then_ I could see the login screen...
This is to say: X11 is usable after manual interaction.
