Thanks for the reply...
unfortunately the problem must have been more deep-seated. I already looked
at the sound preferences. I looked at the sound troubleshooting page and
installed the new version of ALSA (1.0.23), and then the sound worked again
(so my problem is fixed, though maybe this wasn't the quickest way to fix
it!
