Not necessarily - I don't know if Simple Scan does any post-processing
- maybe it is scanning in colour, and converting to greyscale in
software.

I know that xsane does some post-processing.

However, I'm not saying that the bug is not gscan2pdf.

I can't see any problem there.

Please start gscan2pdf with the --debug option, switch to the
scanimage frontend in Edit/Preferences and repeat the greyscale scan,
posting the output from the command line.
