sorry for the delay in response. the problem still exists although it is slightly different now. there is no longer the blinking underscore but the system will never turn off the psu. one time and i have not been able to replicate the results, the screens went black and the then the password dialog came back on. i suspect it was caused by a screwy usb device after i removed this device the previously stated condition has been the norm.
