Made an interesting discovery. I backed up the existing Feisty and got out a Feisty that had been updated from Dapper ...but wouldn't boot. Once I figured out the boot problem (upgrade does take care of menu.lst, properly) that same Feisty was brought entirely up-to-date using 'apt- get dist-upgrade'.
The result was a Feisty upgraded directly from Dapper that, though it exhibited the same keyboard phenomenon on first boot... worked properly on second boot. More on first boot: When kdm loaded to the point that the Desktop appeared & started initializing, I commenced to tap the SHIFT key repeatedly and it was not until AFTER that little tune plays when KDE is up and operational, that the abhorrent keyboard behavior started. That would seem to point directly at KDE, rather than xorg, would it not?
