I also get black and gray lines over the menu items when I use openoffice, but
I cannot see any output in the terminal when I open openoffice using:
$ soffice
so I can only guess that it's the same error since it produces the same symptom.

The error message appears when using emacs all the time, but the black
and gray lines appear when I have a second monitor plugged in.
