Well, although the issue has been considered closed, for me Firefox has continued to be slow in comparison with Opera. The problem has disappeared gradually as a result of Firefox & system updates. I have moved on to Ubuntu 10.4 (64 bit). Now with Firefox 3.6.10 the issues seem to have been resolved. X-marks or the great number of bookmarks do not seem to matter anymore.
Firefox is now lightning fast! As it was just before I moved from 9.04 (64 bit) to 9.10. From now on I shall adopt new Ubuntu versions less eagerly than before. It seems to make sense to resist the (huge) temptation to download a new version and see all the new goodies it brings. I have made a vow to not to seek the early wow sensation anymore. I shall let each new Ubuntu version to mature a few months before I make my move. In any case I appreciate very much the work of all developers who have contributed to solving the Firefox problem. I do not now how you did it, but I know that using Ubuntu & Firefox gives me a great joy.
