I tried using kernel version 2.6.32-22-generic, which was NOT patched to support suspend/resume on my machine (SCI_EN patch from bug #594837). The unpatched kernel will successfully suspend/resume every other attempt. That version also exhibited the problem following suspend/resume. So the problem is not caused by the SCI_EN fix.
