Thanks for the response, and the helpful suggestions. I did indeed find that a re-boot cleared the lock and allowed the installation to complete.
However, the "bug" I am concerned about is the original failure to install correctly. I had noticed the same "hang" after the configuring of alternatives step at an earlier upgrade of samba; this time I thought it worth reporting.
