i installed the latest kernel via apt-get, and it fixed the sleep
problem.  you can probably close this bug.

this is the kernel i'm running now:

$ uname -rvm
2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 14:24:04 UTC 2010 i686

just for archival purposes, the version of the kernel that had trouble sleeping 
is:
2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP
