The discussion so far deals with the permissions of the device. But I think what is more important is that by default, the user is not part of the group "scanner". In fact that group doesn't even exist after a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. The user does not get an error message that points to the permission problem - the scanner just does not work (I have a canon canoscan lide 25, but I think this problem is for all scanner types).
