IPv6 support hasn't been removed, it's still supported, but it must be explicitly enabled. This is also true of other major operating systems, they don't enable it by default (that I'm aware of) because it causes problems.
Most cheap commodity hardware, e.g. routers, DSL modems, etc. do not understand IPv6. With ipv6 enabled by default, it is possible for a DNS lookup to return an IPv6 address instead.
