  Binary package hint: nautilus
  
  In Nautilus "Open with Other Application"  has a "Remember this
  application for $FILETYPE files" feature which is enabled by default and
  also does not work.
  
  Expecting:
  1) Not on by default, as this may be used for one-off, opening a file in 
another program.
  2) If it's checked, it should remember the program selected

+ - right click the file in question
+ - select PROPERTIES all the way down in the popup menu
