Running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). Just installed FreeCol and I also ran into what appears to be the same problem. It is reproducable. Steps: Start a new game in single player mode. I chose English as the Nation, allowed other nations, and then sailed west. After several movements I ended the turn. The game crashed. Attached is the error log.
