Please check that you have selected the audio input device you want to use in the sound preferences, accessible by clicking the speaker icon from the top panel, and selecting the input tab, and adjusting settings there. Please also make sure that you have configured virtualbox to use the correct audio input device on your host system, and that the volume for the input device on the host system is also unmuted and turned up.
