I suggest you try testing your audio input/mic with either a 10.04 live
CD, or even trying the latest 10.10 beta. If your mic works correctly in
either of these versions of Ubuntu, I suggest you consider upgrading
your system to a newer Ubuntu version to make sure your hardware works
correctly.
