Curiouser and curiouser.  The problem, once it manifests, persists
through multiple reboots.  But on a hunch, I powered completely down and
then started up, and sound started working again.

So... this is a Lenovo T60 laptop.  Maybe there is a problem with
software-suspend that only gets cured on a full power-down/power-up
cycle?
