Tried new Kernel linux- image-2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201009200905_i386.deb - no change in CD activity. As a side, a number of Errors scroll by at start up if an Audio CD is left in one of the drives. I'll try and make a note of a few at next boot.
