I'm not sure that the symptoms I see are the result of the same cause as
bug #622664. However, I've overcome the problem I had, and I thought I'd
point it out here. Apologies if this is not the correct protocol for a
report with duplicate status.

Some time before the upgrade I used this page: http://monespaceperso.org

upgrade alsa (when I had problems capturing audio from an external
device).

I accepted auto-updates on Sept 18 2010 .....

Following reboot I had no sound as described above.

Something I saw on another forum gave me the idea of re-installing the
alsa upgrade. So, for each of the source directories alsa-driver*, alsa-
lib*, alsa-utils*, I did a 'sudo make install'. Following a reboot I had
sound again.
