Temporary fix: Step 1: if there is no volume applet in the notification area, then run 'gnome-volume-control-applet'
Step 2: Right click on 'volume' applet, and select 'sound preferences' Step 3: In sound preferences window, open 'Hardware' tab and select the 'Internal Audio' hardware.
