The problem got introduced when you installed xpdf-utils (2010-09-05 19:17:03). This package conflicts with poppler-utils and poppler-utils is required by CUPS. Therefore the installation of xpdf-utils with apt- get uninstalls CUPS and all packages which depend on CUPS. One of these packages is HPLIP (see below). Later on you have tried to recover (2010-09-05 19:31:31), probably by reinstalling CUPS and some (but not all) of its dependencies. Especially you did not install hplip again. You even installed hplip-cups (2010-09-13 15:01:54) but this does not pull in hplip.
This is not a bug, CUPS needs the poppler-utils as that package provides a pdftops utility with the "-origpagesizes" option to print documents with variable page sizes. Only the pdftops of the poppler-utils package provides this, not the one of xpdf-utils. So the xpdf-utils package cannot be used in environments with CUPS. t...@till:~/printing/pyppd/pyppd$ sudo apt-get install xpdf-common Reading package lists...
