Thanks, I found the solution in the end - was the issue caused by a
version incompatibility with settings?

To get rid of this bug, remove the file
~/.config/chromium/Default/Preferences. If this will not help, remove
thhe whole ~/.config/chromium folder. In the case of removing the whole
folder you will lose all your bookmarks etc.
