Expected: Graphical windows and other objects should not leave/inspire
any trash on the screen when they are closed/destroyed
What happens instead:
I frequently observe graphical trash in KDE desktop in various positions of the
screen, when KWin is DISABLED. These trash effects seem to be binded to certain
specific windows/objects: gnuplot wxWidget windows, desktop panels, and
(grouped) Konsole windows. I have never seen them affecting other windows or
elements of the GUI.
Actually there are two types of the trash: rectangular parts of the screen
overdrawn by the background desktop picture and trash left by the window
selection menu arising from the group of the Konsole apps in the taskbar. The
trash of the first type is somehow related to the usual KDE hints in smoothed
rectangles, that emerge when I move mouse to any desktop widget, icon, etc. The
trash emerge in the places where such hints were located somewhen before (and
this trash has exactly the same smoothed rectangular shape). The trash of the
second type is left when I switch between grouped Konsole windows using the
taskbar menu (which arises after clicking on the group).
Sorry if this problem seems rather insignificant, when it started I did
not pay any attention to it, but since it walks from one Ubuntu release
to another without getting fixed, it becomes very annoying. Same
problems were present in KUbuntu Karmic, maybe even Jaunty (but not sure
about Jaunty know, long time passed), and now they are inhereited by
Lucid. This graphical trash is not related to the video driver: I am
seeing it on different computers with Intel and NVidia crads, so this is
a common KDE problem. Since compositing WM should be disabled, it is
probably not related to 3D software too. Maybe it is caused by X or by
2D window manager, not sure.
All problems go away when KWin is enabled, but in my system with intel
video card KWin is slow, so I usually turn it off.
