I have a Nikon coolpix s203 camera and was running into a similar
problem: dmesg:

As suggested in #106, I disable the MTP plugin in Rhythmbox, plugged my
camera back in, and it was properly mounted. That seemed to be the
problem for me. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with all updates installed.
