I understand that ext4 does journaling and that the journal must be written to disk from time to time. What escapes me is why the disk must be written every few seconds __when no disk access is needed at all__.
That is the issue I struggle with on my netbook -- most of the time I need no disk access when browsing the internet, yet my disk accesses every 5 to 10 seconds like clockwork.
