Sorry for taking so long. I tried to produce as useful a feedback as
possible and got bogged down in details (such as transconding AVCHD
movies).

At the following links you will find two movies capturing the boot
process. I was not able to capture any other debugging information /
logs, sorry.

http://www.photopla.net/K1041AMD.AVI

shows the boot/reboot process with a 10.4.1 AMD CD

http://www.photopla.net/K104LTS386.AVI

shows the boot process with a 10.4 x386 CD

I understand this seems to be a very special case that is afflicting
only me. Maybe it is related to the system's bluetooth keyboard
(Logitech diNovo Edge)?

Also, if this is just about me, (a) I have a workaround (remove the
video card, install Kubuntu, install the video card) and (b) I don't
often do install from scratch. So for me this is only about helping
improve Kubuntu (assuming that the underlying bug can cause symptoms in
other areas and to other people as well). The Windows XP installation
process runs smoothly on that same hardware, so if Windows can, so
should Kubuntu?
