Hi Toño, JE, thanks for the responses. I tried installing the following packages before I saw Toño's comment: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic-pae sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic
This seemed to work better, but with heavy bittorrent usage plus running a lot of traffic through a soap client it hung again. So I tried sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.35-2.6.32-25-generic I'm pretty sure it's hung at least once since then. I've enabled proposed and backports and will try the exact instructions above.
