I had the same problem with Karmic. I installed sbackup, made some test backup 
and restore, 
and maybe i made an error. Because permission from /tmp was changed from 1777 
to 0755  :-),
i changed back permission from /tmp to 1777 ( rwxrwxrwt ) and now all works 
fine again.
