I forgot to mention that /dev/sda9 contained the empty fs I specified for /
and /dev/sda7 contained the (non-empty) fs I specified for /home .
Also, I had checked the options to download updates while installing, and 
include non-free components.

/var/log/syslog, attached, contains some errors from the installer
(timestamps trimmed off for brevity):
