Public bug reported: Can not install Maverick RC (downloaded 9/29/2010, desktop amd64) if the installer is booted from a hard-disk partition.
The problem is that the partitioning dialog does not allow selection of pre-existing partitions to install into. It issues a warning saying that creating new partitions will not be possible because a partition on the same drive is already mounted (because the installer was booted from that drive), but that existing partitions can be used. However the latter is not actually possible because of this bug. The installer was placed on a hard-disk partition using the procedure explained in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromLinux How to reproduce: 1. On a working Linux system, re-partition (if necessary) to create two unused partitions on the same drive, one to hold root (/) of the system to be installed, the other to hold the installer system. Format BOTH partitions with ext3 file systems. 2. Get the amd64 desktop iso image, mount via loopback, and copy the entire contents into one of the partitions created in step 1 (I used /dev/sda8). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromLinux for one way. 3. Update grub to allow booting the installer system from, e.g. /dev/sda8 (see referenced web page for detail). 4. Reboot, select the installer system. It boots directly to the "live" desktop. The disk partition (/dev/sda8) is mounted as /cdrom 5. Double-click the "Install to hard disk" desktop icon. When you get to the partition-setup dialog, there is no way to specify to install root (/) on your pre-existing partition (/dev/sda9 in this example).
