Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-sound

Ubuntu 10.10 (beta), fully updated.

packages:
    indicator-sound 0.4.7-0ubuntu2
    rhythmbox 0.13.1-0ubuntu5

Expected behavior:
Song titles are displayed in full in the indicator-sound menu, word-wrapped if
necessary.

Observed behavior:
Song titles over ~20 characters are truncated to fit the indicator-sound menu,
with the middle of the title replaced by elipsis.

This is a suggestion for a design change, not a bug. Please mark it
"Wishlist".

For long song titles, displaying only the beginning and end of the title
with elipsis in the middle gives illegible results. For instance, my
current indicator-sound menu lists the current song as:

"Bach (JS):...BWV 858"

In this format, almost none of the classical music tracks on my computer
have legible titles. The same is true for the album name:

"Bach (JS):...r [Disk 1]"

The rhythmbox status icon, on the other hand, displays the entire song
title and the entire album name, word-wrapped of course, in a bubble of
approximately the same width and height as the song information area in
indicator-sound. They even use a larger font. The difference is that
indicator-sound devotes half of its available space to album cover art,
even when there is no album art available for the song.

If I had to choose between a tiny thumbnail of the album cover and a
legible song title, I would choose the legible title every time. How
about you?

(BTW, the convention of eliding the middle of a string instead of
wrapping to a new line is very strong throughout the emerging Ubuntu UI
style. In Unity the names of all files are presented in the same way,
which means that most filenames are illegible. If this is a
distribution-wide design standard, then perhaps the indicator-sound bug
list is not the appropriate place to raise my concerns. Can you suggest
a better place?)

** Affects: indicator-sound (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
