Okay, I've managed to reproduce the problem. It's fallout from /bin/sh
being dash, but easily fixed.

ddns3-client (1.8-6ubuntu2) feisty; urgency=low

  * Use -z and actually quote variables we test for, so that the init
    script doesn't bomb on a fresh install. (LP: #99780)
  * Munge Maintainer field as per spec.
